Introduction to Blood Pressure |

| On an average, the normal human heart beats almost 90,000 times every
day. Each heart beat causes blood to be expelled into strong, muscular tubes
called arteries. Arteries carry blood to all the parts of the body and
branch into finer and finer tubes along the course. In Pre-hypertension, each heartbeat generates a force which is transferred to the blood. This force is carried through into the arteries as blood is expelled from the heart. The presure thus caused pushes against the walls of the arteries and the walls push back. This causes the blood to be propelled forward into various parts of the body. Due to this force a pressure is caused within the arteries. This is called blood presure. The measurement of bloodpressure consists of two units. When the heart contracts the systolic pressure is measured. This is the larger of the two units. When the heart relaxes the diastolic presure is measured. This is the smaller of the units. These two are written as 122/84, and is pronounced as 122 over 84. Both types of pressure are important is determining cardiovascular risk or other casualties, and affect fat people more. It is also hereditary. If the pressure of the blood is too high, a blood vessel could be damaged and even ruptured causing complications like bleeding. If the blood presure is not enough, the required amount of blood does not reach all the parts of the body, hence the cells do not receive the necessary amount of oxygen and nutrients and the waste products may not be removed adequately. |
