Causes of High Blood Presure |
|||||||||
| In most cases, doctors do not know the cause of hypertension or high
blood pressure. However, even though the causes are not fully understood,
both drug and non-drug treatments have been developed to treat the disease
effectively. Also some factors that contribute to high blood presure have
been identified. These factors are the hardening of the arteries or
arteriosclerosis, thickening of the walls of the arteries and the excess
contraction of the small arteries. About 75 million Americans suffer from hypertension. Though its underlying cause is still unknown, certain associations have been found in people suffering from hypertension. High blood pressure is found in societies which have a higher intake of salt, usually crossing 5.8 grams a day. In several situations the high intake of salt is an important factor causing hypertension in many situations. Coarctation of the aorta is another cause of hypertension. This is a rare genetical disease that commonly causes hypertension in children. This generally causes the narrowing down of a part of the aorta. The aorta is the main artery that delivers blood from the heart to the arteries that supply blood to the vital organs including the kidneys. Another cause of hypertension is tumors of the adrenal gland. These tumors that rarely occur may cause the excessive secretion of hormones which may cause hypertension. Blood and urine tests and the image study of the adrenal glands help in diagnosing these tumors. Often surgery is required to remove the tumors. This usually reduces hypertension. Metabolic syndrome and obesity also causes hypertension. Those with metabolic syndrome have insulin resistance and may develop diabetes. Obesity leads to high blood sugar, high amounts of body fats, vascular inflammation and hypertension.
